Boxer Chris Eubank wants to put up two detached houses on either side of his luxury home.
The former world champion has submitted plans to Brighton and Hove Council for land on either side of the house in The Upper Drive, Hove. He already has another house next door.
His outline application has been recommended for approval, but councillors agreed to a suggestion from a neighbour that a site visit should be made before a decision is made.
The visit will take place before the next meeting of the planning committee on March 28 so that councillors can see whether one of the new homes would cause loss of light and privacy.
Eubank bought the two existing homes when he started making money from boxing. The loft in one has been converted into a gym.
Planning officer Paul Earp said the two Eubank houses had exceptionally large gardens compared with the rest of the area.
He added: "The subdivision of the site into three would still result in plots larger than most."
