Billy Smith is determined to end Crawley's decade of failure in the Sussex Senior Cup by lifting this year's trophy.

Reds, the second senior team in Sussex, have failed to win the competition since they defeated Littlehampton 2-1 at the Goldstone Ground in 1991.

The Crawley boss said: "It's top of our priority list now. We will keep trying to make up ground in the league, but in reality this is the best chance we have got of winning something this season.

"Supporters love their big day out and I would dearly love to give it to them this season. With Albion out of the competition we are now the favourites and there can be no excuses if we fail to lift the cup this season."

Reds will come up against Langney Sports on Tuesday in the quarter-finals and Smith admits he knows little about his opponents.

He knows manager Garry Wilson and a couple of the players, but today he was running the rule over last year's County League champions who are enjoying a fine debut season in the Eastern Division of the Dr Martens League.

Smith said: "I know about the likes of John Westcott because I saw him at Sutton, and a few of the other lads. But to be honest, I'm not a great one for worrying about the opposition.

"I'll be taking a look at them, but will be telling the players to concentrate on their game.

"Langney have done well. Any team that can beat Chelmsford in convincing fashion must have something about them, although I did notice they slipped up at Grantham.

"But we're playing at the top end of the Premier Division and start as favourites. It's important the players are up to their full potential and then we should be all right.

"Cups, though, are all about upsets, so we will need to be on our guard."

Langney counterpart Wilson will be heartened by fellow Eastern Division side Ashford's victory against Reds in the FA Trophy over a month ago.

Wilson's men were given the shock of their lives at Grantham on Tuesday night.

Wilson conceded: "This game showed how much we have got to learn. We were muscled off the park by their big strong men. That is where we're lacking.

"Our team is a footballing one and doesn't include many strong physical lads."

Keeper Will Packham has impressed in the first two games of his loan spell from Albion. Wilson admitted: "He couldn't do a lot for any of the five goals."
