Brighton and Hove City Council has bowed to the inevitable in abandoning plans for residents' parking north of Davigdor Road in Hove.
A clear majority of those returning survey forms in that part of Goldsmid ward said they did not like the idea and would rather continue as they were.
But further sampling is still needed to see whether a new parking area should be created south of Davigdor Road where problems are worse and opinion much more closely divided.
Talks are also needed with large local employers to see if they can take any action to reduce parking pressure, especially during the day.
Residents complaining about the cost of consultation should remember the process is by its nature expensive.
The result was close enough to make the exercise worth undertaking.
