We represent several of the Cycling clubs of Brighton and Hove and we demand that motorists keep the cycle lane clear at Coombe Terrace (opposite B&Q) on the Lewes Road in Brighton.
This is a main route into Brighton from the universities and unless the continual parking in the cycle lane is stopped, a cyclist will be fatally injured. We urge Brighton and Hove City Council, the police and the new traffic wardens to take action.
We are road cycling clubs and we see no reason why we should be removed from the roads. We are responsible and experienced cyclists. We also expect motorists to be responsible and leave our way free.
We are sending this letter to Roger Simmons, the cycling officer for Brighton and Hove City Council, and asking for a response.
Tony Green, Frank Blake and Simon Birnstingl, on behalf of Brighton Cyclists Touring Club, Brighton Mitre Cycling Club and Regent Road Club
-* Roger Simmons, cycling officer of Brighton and Hove City Council, replies: The council is well aware of the problem but parking enforcement is the responsibility of the police. We have asked for stricter enforcement in Coombe Terrace and I understand the cycling clubs have also met with the police. The extent of enforcement by the police or traffic wardens here has to be set against their other priorities elsewhere and resources available to them. The council is preparing to take over most aspects of parking enforcement from the police in the summer. Enforcement against illegal parking will be increased and this is expected to lead to better parking practice across the city as a whole. Consideration can also be given to the existing parking restrictions at Coombe Terrace.
