Former Eastbourne Council boss Sari Conway has been turned down for a Government post.
The former chief executive of Eastbourne Borough Council is thought to have applied for a senior position in the immigration service.
But the Home Office has turned her down for the job, which would have involved dealing with applications by asylum-seekers.
A spokeswoman said: "Mrs Conway will not be taking up employment with the Home Office.
"In the light of the circumstances, it was judged inappropriate to offer her a permanent position."
Mrs Conway was sacked from her £72,000-a-year job as the council's top officer a month ago after being suspended for a year on full pay.
She had been accused of bullying staff and having inappropriate relationships.
