So Councillor Gwyn-Jones thinks those who voted against a directly elected mayor are undemocratic (Argus, February 21).

Surely, in a country which taught the world democracy, the opposition and those councillors who voted against the proposition still retain the right to vote for or against something they consider not to be in the interest of the electorate of this city or as they are directed by their constituents?

Nobody asked me whether I want to live in a city or of my views on the benefits of a directly elected mayor or a threefold increase in traffic control when the wardens are phased out.

Now Brighton and Hove has a Royal Warrant, £160,000 would be better spent tidying the place up and generally making the city somewhere to be proud of.
