One of those workmen who have begun their task at the wrong end of George Street, Hove, told me the rough surface at the south end is in fact the finished thing.

This is astonishing. I only hope that the council has kept up its insurance payments for anybody can see trouble ahead. The gullies at the roadside, made from the same chunky cobblestones, will not carry rainwater away quickly enough. This problem will be compounded when trees are planted. Not only has any consideration of their darkening shop interiors been overlooked but trees also drop leaves.

To judge by Sita's performance elsewhere, the street will be awash with sludge every day with pedestrians prone on a surface which seems to have been constructed on the cheap.

What a sorry fate for a town which used to call itself "a distinguished resort".
