Two athletes achieved their All England Schools Championships standards at the first Crawley Open.
Brighton and Hove's Jenny Bliss, who forwent her usual cross country season to train seriously for the track, had her first ever race in the 300 metres hurdles and, in cold and unhelpful conditions, clocked 46.5secs, three tenths of a second inside the entry standard time.
Jenny's run was faster than any Sussex under-17 performer had achieved for two years.
Last year she ran the 800 metres at All England in the under-15 age group in July and she also ran for the Sussex Schools cross country team and competed in the final of the Multi-events Championships at All England Schools.
Club mate Lucy Ramsay did even better in the under-15 long jump.
Adding nearly 20cm to her best leap of 2000, Lucy cleared 5.20m. which is the All England Schools National standard and virtually assures her a place in the Sussex schools team providing she can hold this sort of the form for the next couple of months.
