I wish I could believe all that is maintained by Adam Trimingham in his piece about the Freemasons (Argus, March 27).

Unfortunately, it reads too much like a PR job. I assume Trimingham isn't a Mason himself? According to the piece, the Masons have absolutely no influence any more, and practically no councillors, judges, police, etc belong any longer. I find that hard to believe.

But what I still do not understand is what the Masons actually do. Andy Durr says he joined because a previous mayor asked him to. So you don't need to hold any beliefs or principles before joining? What do members get out of it if, as Trimingham claims, it brings absolutely no influence or advantage in public affairs?
