Martin Lee made an impressive Davis Cup debut with a crushing victory over Portgual's Antonio Van Grichen in the National Indoor Arena yesterday.
Great Britain captain Roger Taylor handed Lee his debut after Tim Henman and Greg Rusedski's doubles win on Saturday afternoon gave the home side an unassailable 3-0 lead in the Euro/African Zone Group One tie.
The 23-year-old, from East Preston, seized his opportunity in style with a clinical 6-2 6-0 demolition of Van Grichen in just 45 minutes.
He said: "The crowd gave me such a big reception that it settled the nerves and everything in my game worked almost perfectly.
"I could not have asked for anything more and that match is going to help me so much the next time I play if it's a live rubber."
Lee is currently ranked a career-high 145th in the world and appears to be finally fulfilling the potential he showed when ranked number one junior in the world as an 18-year-old.
Regular sessions with a sports psychologist have been crucial in curbing the flashes of temper that held Lee back and he joked: "I've gone four months without breaking a racket or getting any fines!
"After the tournament in Brighton in November I looked at my game and decided what was the main thing that was going to help me and that was the mental side."
Somerset's Lee Childs then completed the whitewash with a similarly impressive debut, beating Tiago Vinhas de Sousa in straight sets.
