Councillors who led an investigation into a faulty market canopy have said money must be spent putting it right.
A special scrutiny panel was appointed by Brighton and Hove City Council to look into the £125,000 canopy at the Open Market off London Road.
The five-member panel unanimously concluded it was not fit for its intended purpose of protecting customers and traders.
It said more protection should be provided through a new sub-structure. Temporary structures put up by traders should be removed and compensation offered, members said.
The cost was estimated at £100,000 and the council was short of cash. But members of the corporate resource allocation scrutiny board were unanimous in pressing for action.
Labour councillor Kevin Allen said it was crucial for the council Cabinet to implement the recommendations. He added: "We expect action."
Mary Mears, who chairs the Open Market Traders' Association, said: "I was very happy with the meeting. We have had a disastrous winter."
