Brendon Wyatt had bells ringing in his head after an unfortunate collision during an indoor match.
Brendon, who plays for Victoria Park in the Portslade Sports Centre Spring Indoor League, banged his head against a fire alarm, causing chaos at the complex.
The sports centre was packed when the alarm system sounded and embarrassed Brendon, his team-mates and Shoreham Seagulls opponents looked on as fellow sportsmen and women began to evacuate.
Brendon explained: "I was going for the ball and was tussling with one of their players. As I went in for a challenge my head bumped into the alarm.
"It was quite a whack and I thought I was hearing bells in my head. Then as everyone started laughing and I saw people leaving the building it dawned that the alarm system had been set off.
"It was a highly embarrassing moment."
At least Brendon has one good story to tell at future parties and to his grandchildren.
But one tale he won't be telling is the outcome of the match. Once order was restored, the game continued and his men were defeated 3-1 to maintain Shoreham Seagulls' 100 per cent record in the league.
Club spokesman Darryl Collinson said: "It was highly entertaining, although I am sure Brendon didn't think so."
He does now - and quips: "I always wanted to be a fireman!"
