The historic Shoreham Toll Bridge crossing the swirling River Adur was built in 1781.
There are now safety concerns surrounding the timber-decked structure which had £100,000 spent on it in 1983.
West Sussex County Council has been told the time has come to decide whether it should be closed on safety grounds or whether it should build a replacement.
It seems sad for such a well-known landmark to close as it has been part of the landscape for centuries.
So plans to refurbish the existing bridge and extend its life by 30 years should be applauded and supported.
The news that the county council has promised £100,000 towards the project should help secure its future.
Not only would the work save a historic part of Sussex but it would generate interest in the heritage of the area.
