A campaign to cut traffic speed along a route through South Chailey and Offham could soon pay off.
Residents in Offham and South Chailey have complained that the present 60mph limit is too fast and should be reduced.
Lewes MP Norman Baker has said he has been assured by East Sussex County Council there is to be a consultation with police about reducing speed limits along the A275.
The MP said there could be a lower 40mph speed limit and safety improvements at the junction of the A275 and the B2611 towards Plumpton as well as a review of signing at the A275 junction and the A2029 junction north of Lewes.
Mr Baker has been pressing for improvements for several years and said he received the news from the county council about the possible lowering of the speed limit which would cover the stretch of the A275 from just north of Caveridge Lane to just south of Andros Close as well as nearby side roads.
Mr Baker said: "Since my election I have had letters from many local people, particularly from Chailey and Offham, concerned about the safety of the A275. All have advocated a lower speed limit.
"It is indeed eyebrow raising that the limit through both areas is presently 60, when other villages have had their limits reduced. I am delighted the county council appears to be moving towards lower limits."
