It is Richard Halfpenny (Opinion, April 10) who should apologise - for his dangerously ignorant and simple-minded assertion that DNA evidence can show conclusive proof of a suspect's guilt.

The family of James Hanratty is continuing its fight to clear his name because DNA profiling is just as vulnerable to errors, such as cross-contamination, as any other forensic test. In this case, we are talking about samples taken from the remains of a body which has been dead for almost 40 years - considerable degeneration of the DNA could have occurred during that time.
