I read with interest your editorial "It's got to go somewhere" (Argus, April 13).

We all create waste. In the past 50 years, increasing affluence for the majority has added to both our consumption and disposal.

Some of this is beyond our control - excess packaging of foodstuff, built-in obsolescence of consumer goods and the end of bottle return schemes. Equally, we all have an ability to reduce our waste - buying recycled, composting at home or even using our own shopping bag makes a difference.

However, none of these means building an incinerator at Newhaven (or elsewhere) is inevitable. Incinerators are not sustainable. They are an extremely expensive, dangerous, ugly and inefficient method of reducing valuable resources to toxic ash which then has to be landfilled.

Evidence from this country (Daventry, Wealden, Sutton) and abroad demonstrates viable, sustainable alternatives exist. If Brighton and Hove City Council was to provide a kerbside recycling and composting scheme, the need to pollute Newhaven with our waste would disappear.
