Haywards Heath and Sussex under-20s face arguably their biggest ever tests today on a momentous afternoon for the county's rugby hopes.

Heath tackle London Two South title rivals Canterbury in the most important league match ever staged in the county.

Meanwhile, the Sussex youngsters go to Bridgwater to meet Somerset in a County Championship quarter-final being rated one of the biggest games in the Sussex RFU's history.

Heath are already assured of at least a promotion play-off place but need to avoid defeat today if they are to take the title.

They edged out Canterbury 6-5 just before Christmas and today's clash should be just as hard fought.

Skipper Dave Wattam said: "This game has been a long time coming. There are some nervous people around here and I personally cannot wait.

"It was tight last time we played them. I don't think they had come up against a side who can defend like we can."

Heath have suffered a double blow with Nick Dinsdale suffering ligament damage and wing Mark Pymm picking up an ankle injury in midweek training.

Damien Lyall continues in the second row while Pymm's misfortune could mean a dramatic first start of the season for Henry Goodburn.

Sussex under-20s headed west yesterday afternoon in the build-up to their big clash (1pm).

A big crowd is assured with the game acting as curtain raiser to a senior county derby between Somerset and Devon.

Team manager Alan Jenkins said: "This, for most of the players, will be the biggest game of their careers so far and is one of the biggest in the history of the Sussex RFU. The squad have gelled well together in their group games and are confident."
