Matt Prior is relishing the prospect of his first engagement in the Sussex team.
The 19-year-old wicketkeeper from Brighton is one of three debutants for the Championship opener against Worcestershire at New Road today.
New overseas player Murray Goodwin will open the innings while Bas Zuiderent gets his first chance after two years on the staff. Off spinner Mark Davis may also play, although it's more likely that Mark Robinson will get the nod.
Prior's ability with the bat has earned him selection ahead of Nick Wilton, but he accepts that the hard work is only just beginning.
He said: "It's a very nice feeling to be selected, but the most important thing for me now is to perform. There's no use getting into the side and not doing anything to contribute."
Prior has worked hard since joining the county staff a month ago.
He added: "My keeping in particular has come on a lot. I have put in a lot of work with Peter Moores and Nick Wilton and I hope it pays off."
Prior's debut may be delayed by the weather. Heavy rain in the Midlands means prospects of play on the first day are described as 'slim'.
The opening day of Sussex II against Warwickshire at Moseley yesterday was washed out.
Sussex: Montgomerie, Goodwin, Adams (capt), Zuiderent, Cottey, Rashid, Martin-Jenkins, Prior, Davis or Robinson, Kirtley, Lewry.
