A strategy for the regeneration of Brighton and Hove is likely to receive a boost tomorrow.

The city council's policy and resources committee is expected to back plans that will bring in new skills and prosperity.

The strategy will provide a framework for action which the city's main economic partners and agencies can work within to build a stronger economy.

It will help to spread the benefits of prosperity more evenly across the community.

The regeneration strategy was prepared after consultation with "hard-to-reach" groups, such as minority ethnic, disabled and lesbian and gay communities.

The business community was also asked for ideas through a programme of working dinners and the Success In the City event held earlier this year.

As a result, a new business-led economic partnership for Brighton and Hove was formed and will provide leadership for the strategy.

It proposed action on four main fronts:

Jobs - building on the city's existing strengths in financial services, tourism and public services and supporting growth in emerging sectors like the creative industries and new media.

Learning and skills - taking action to ensure the workforce has the skills needed to get good jobs and meet employers' requirements.

People - ensuring all residents can contribute and gain by being involved in decision- making.

Environment - improving the city's physical environment to make it a more attractive and stimulating place to live and work.

Ken Bodfish, executive councillor for regeneration, said: "Our city depends on a creative, independent and self-reliant community and will seek to find its own solutions to its problems.

"This strategy gives us much more power to support that process by providing the frame-work within which we can work together with partners to make the economy even more resilient."
