John Limpus and Steve Geran finished second best to Dorset ace Brian Taylor, who produced an amazing burst of speed to win the opening race in the Hove Park Series.

Taylor (Bournemouth Arrow), with several wins on the 1km circuit last year, broke away from the main group of some 30 riders early on in the 25-lap race.

He was joined by Saltdean rider Limpus (GS Stella) and Bexhill's Geran (VC Bayeaux) and they worked so well together that they were soon held half-a-lap ahead.

They went on to lap most of the field, but approaching the finish Taylor stormed up the one hill on the circuit and won comfortably by four lengths from Limpus, with Geran a further length behind in third.

Mark Winton (Lewes Wanderers) placed sixth followed by Sussex riders Toby Leyton (Regent), Sean McClelland (VC Londres), Darren Pembroke (Blazing Saddles) and Chris Dransfield (Worthing Excelsior).

Hastings rider Peter Tadros (VC Bayeaux) notched up his fifth win of the season in the Rother Valley CC's 25 mile time trial at Petersfield. Tadros recorded an excellent 54min.19sec despite the blustery conditions. Hampshire's Chris Birch (St Raphael) finished second in 55min.45sec.

Dave Pollard (In Gear) recorded 59min.47sec for seventh place and Robin Fairhurst (Worthing Excelsior) was tenth in 1hr.1min.38sec.

The new Sussex-based Blazing Saddles club have made a good start to the season.

Robin Thompson won the 500m handicap event at the Good Friday track meeting at Herne Hill. Dan Watson finished second overall in the Surrey Three Day race with Chester Hill fourth and Paul Bailey seventh.

Brighton Mitre riders Jay Chisnall, Mark Farley and Robin Johnson won the team prize in the Tooting BC 40-mile time trial.

A lady in Saltdean has found some pre-war cycling medals which she wishes to return to the winner or his family. They are all engraved with the name E.A. Miller and were awarded between 1927 and 1936 by organisations that include the Sussex Cyclists Association and Brighton Excelsior.
