Matt Barnes of Newhaven produced a consistent performance to reach the final of the All England 21 and Under championship at Woking on Saturday.
But then he repeated last week's trick and collapsed to a 5-1 defeat in the final against Andrew Norman, who turns professional next season.
Barnes' only success came in the fifth when he completed a 71 break to beat Norman's 63 opening break.
Up to then the Newhaven star had produced great consistency to beat Jimmy Robertson 4-1 in the semi-finals including breaks of 49, 83 and a 38 clearance in the decider. Simon Munday was beaten 4-2 in the quarter-finals with breaks of 40, 51 and 78 in the sixth. Breaks of 42, 97 and 50 helped him beat Dave Talbot 4-0 in the first round.
Tomorrow at the Q-Ball, Barnes goes into the East Sussex championship semi-final draw with Steve Crowley of Crowborough, Mark Tilbury of Hastings and Michael West of Brighton.
