When members of all major political parties sink their differences to fight against a new idea such as elected mayors, one becomes rather intrigued as to what unites them.
It can hardly be concern for democracy. France is not less democratic because it has elected mayors. To say the present system is a safeguard against fraud and corruption has to be seen in the light of Westminster, Hackney and other places.
Political power undoubtedly does corrupt but this can easily be controlled by simply placing a legal limit of two periods of office, as they do with US presidents.
