Parents returned home to find their teenage son collapsed on their front doorstep and covered in blood.
The 17-year-old was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, where he received stitches to a head wound.
He told police attackers had hit him on the head with a piece of wood as he was returning home in The Broadway, Whitehawk, Brighton, on Saturday evening.
The youth was later allowed home from hospital and police inquiries are continuing.
