Confusion is preventing businesses in Sussex from saving millions through environmental efficiency, a survey says.
The majority of firms in the county recognised the benefits of improved environmental efficiency, yet they were unaware of what represents environmental best practice.
Findings of a survey by Envirowise showed a large number of companies had not taken advantage of the benefits that could come with improved environmental policies.
Envirowise director Martin Gibson said: "Our findings reveal the environment is a critical competitiveness issue.
"Businesses which have embraced environmental best practice have cut their costs and increased profits. Over the past year alone, we have demonstrated dealing with such issues makes good business sense, having helped UK companies save more than £125 million by increasing efficiency through better environmental management."
One company from Sussex to benefit through increasing environmental efficiency is the Uckfield-based printer, Beacon Press.
Over the past ten years, the company has built a reputation for environmental awareness and received 15 environmental awards.
Its key achievements include the development of Pureprint, a proprietary printing system designed to reduce waste and environmental impact while increasing quality.
Chairman Mark Fairbrass said: "Waterless printing represents the way forward for any company seeking to achieve the twin benefits of superior print-quality combined with practical help for the environment."
The Envirowise survey, which consulted directors and senior managers in companies across the county, found 95 per cent of environmental projects are successful, which emphasises their low risk.
The top three benefits were: Cutting waste costs; an improved company image; and an improved working environment The survey identified confusion was most pronounced among small and medium-sized companies. They were less likely to have the time and resources to investigate these issues.
To remedy this, Envirowise has launched its free Fast Track visits. The visits are confidential on-site waste reviews, providing a chance to identify waste-minimisation opportunities on the spot.
Mr Gibson said: "We have seen a large increase in awareness among companies about the need to improve environmental efficiency and the businesses benefits this can have in terms of reducing costs and increasing profit. However, there is still a lot to be done.
"The biggest obstacle we face is confusion and a lack of knowledge about how to make these changes.
"As a Government programme, Envirowise is there to help companies by offering free, confidential and independent advice on practical ways to minimise waste.
"Businesses can increase profits by as much as £1,000 per employee by eliminating waste at source rather than dealing with it through disposal or re-cycling."
Businesses looking for advice or wanting to register for a Fast Track should call the Environment and Energy Helpline on 0800 585794. Manned by specialist advisers, it handles 700 calls a week.
