Sussex fast bowler James Kirtley will spend the next four days Lording it with the England team.

The county's vice-captain is to perform 12th man duties during the first three days of the first npower Test against Pakistan at Lord's, starting tomorrow.

It's a great opportunity for Kirtley to bowl in the nets at the England batsmen as well as get to know coach Duncan Fletcher.

Kirtley said: "It will be nice to go up there, watch three days of Test cricket at close quarters and be involved in it all."

The 26-year-old has international ambitions of his own. He toured with England A in 1999-2000 and was unlucky not to be selected for last winter's trip to West Indies.

"Of course I'd love to play for England one day myself so this gives me an opportunity to remind people that I'm around and do some net bowling at the guys," he added.

"I haven't really met Duncan Fletcher yet either so I can do that. Phil Neale, the England manager, phoned Peter Moores (Sussex coach) on Saturday and asked if anyone would like to do it. I've had three days off so I'm happy to go up there and then join up with Sussex before the game against Essex on Sunday."

While Kirtley links-up with England today, his Sussex team-mates start a three-day game against Cambridge University at Fenners (11am).

Paul Havell will make his first-class debut in a strong team which includes seven of the side who beat Nottinghamshire at the weekend to register the county's first Championship win of the season.

Havell is the fastest bowler on the staff and Moores is delighted with the progress made by the Melbourne-born 20-year-old this season.

Moores said: "Paul has done really well and even though it's against Cambridge it is his first-class debut and that is always a big occasion for any cricketer.

"He's in a better mental frame of mind than he was last season and he's consistently putting more balls in the right area so it will be good to take a look at him."

Tony Cottey returns after two weeks out with tennis elbow while Richard Montgomerie plays against his old university after recovering from a dislocated finger he suffered during the closing stages of the win over Notts.

Sussex: Montgomerie, Yardy, Zuiderent, Cottey, House, Rashid, Prior, Lewry, Taylor, Havell, Robinson.
