Now we are getting some warmer days and the bars on the seafront are filling with people, I am concerned about something seriously lacking there - sun umbrellas.
Most of the bars have only a handful of tables with umbrellas and, while it is certainly lovely to sit with a beer and feel the sun beating down, adequate shade should also be available for every customer.
The long-term risks of sitting unprotected in the sun are well documented, as is the more immediate likelihood of getting a nasty headache (especially if drinking alcohol). People with young children have nowhere to seek refuge.
I strongly feel that bars with terraces have a duty to provide a safe environment for their customers. That means an umbrella for every table, in true Continental fashion.
Brighton seafront is an ever better place to spend a summer's day, so let's relax and enjoy it in proper style.
