British Airways employee Chris Rose made a flying start in the King Alfred championship singles final and lifted the title for the first time, 21-13 over Tony Dade.

Chris also won the triples with Peter Hubbard and Peter's teenage son David as skip. They beat Brian Borrer, Ted Standing and Trevor Vine 20-14.

Darren Anderson, 13, and David Hubbard, 14, were one shot away from taking the pairs title but, on the 21st end, dropped a single to be beaten 17-16 by Stef Michael and Bob Gooding. It was Bob who drew the match-winning shot.

In the non-winners cup, Barry Steadman won 21-16 over Marc Duson, who is in his first season indoors.

Adastra's David Hewer, Ken Oram, Des Chatfield, Mick George beat Dyke's Terry Smith, Jim Gledhill, Phil Bristow, Simon Wilkinson 22-11 in the League final.

Superb Rita George got her name on the women's singles cup for the fourth time after beating Ann Sanders 21-4. In the pairs it was Margaret Lynsdale and Rita George who won 25-15 over Sylvia Taylor and Audrey Chatfield and in the triples Mary Joffe, Hazel Dobbs and Brenda Tettersell won 25-10 over Hilda Packham, Phyllis Rousseau and Ros Murphy.

Andy Smallbridge won the Preston singles title in his first ever final. In a superb game, he beat last year's runner-up Basil Holding 21-18.

Smallridge went 7-2 ahead but after 13 ends Holding had gone 16-8 in front. Smalldridge then scored 1,1,4,2,4, to be within one 20-16 of victory.

Holding scored two singles and was holding two shots on the next end when he went to try and draw a third for potential victory. But his delivery just tipped in Smalldridge's bowl for shot, which meant Smallridge did not have to bowl his last wood.

After knocking out holders Dave Woosnam and Dave Hesketh 21-16 in the semi-final, Peter Foley and Dave Ovett collapsed in the pairs final. Down 19-2 after 13 ends to Dennis Alderton and Holding, they dropped a further four shots on the 14th end and quit.

In the drawn triples, John Deacon, Cecil Tomkins (substituting for John Austin) and Dave Hurdle went 12-3 ahead at eight ends and won 20-12 against Fred Cosham, Arthur Panton and Dave Yeo.

Ivor Batchelor was elected captain at the annual meeting with ex-Sussex champion cyclist Alan Limbery appointed vice-captain.

Woosnam remains as secretary and as the EIBA have decided to do away with the continuous inter-area play-offs at the last 32 stage in national comp-etitions, Woosnam is to continue as Area 30 secretary. Dave and several other area secretaries had threatened to resign if the play-off system was retained.

Eddie Barry is a new name on the Worthing Pavilion championship singles trophy board. He won the title for the first time by beating Roger Rosenberg 21-18.

There was also a first time winner in the Under-25s singles when Graham Phillips beat Gavin Beven 2-1 in sets. The title had been held by Gavin's brother Gareth, who did not defend it.

A Pavilion finals day without Colin Brown is unheard of. He was there again, with Roger Faithfull in the pairs, and they won 25-9 over Leo Thompson and Nick Dudman.

In the junior/senior pairs Nathan Hart and Bill Simmonds won 16-12 over David Brooks and Paul Smithers.

Dave Webb, Nick Dud-man and Pat Graysmark won the triples 21-10 over Roger Faithfull, Bernie Alcoe and Colin Brown.

Margaret Greenfield beat Shirley Bradburry 21-8 in the women's championship and, in the two wood, Margaret Burtenshaw won 17-10 over Betty Olley.

Margaret Burtenshaw and Kath Dooley won the pairs 26-7 over Dorothy Hillman and Jean Garwood and, in the 100 Up pairs, Greenfield and Bradbury beat Ellen Leggatt and June Lewis 101-79.

Husband and wife Mike and Linda Gray did a singles double at Adur finals.

Mike took the men's title for the first time, against Davie Mole 21-16, and Linda retained her title by beating Judith Redford 21-15.

It was tight in the veterans with Ted Blake beating John Cook 21-20 and in the never won Peter Wilkinson beat Dudley Calder 21-12.

Three down on the last end of the pairs Ken Holden, with his last bowl, drew the shot for himself and Dave Swainston to win 19-18 over David Mole and George Shaw.

Gerry Bridger and Dave Cornwell romped to a 29-8 win over John Urben and Ted Blake in the veterans pairs and Ann Crouch and Iris Grice beat Jean Bridle and Elaine Mathias 15-13 to take the women's title.

Mrs Grice was in four finals and had three successes. Iris skipped Jean Bridle and Ann Crouch to a 21-11 win in the triples over Linda Lester, Sandra Godfrey and Sheila Moore and led for Terry Stevens when they won the drawn mixed pairs 28-23 over Joan Murrell and Dave Stevens.

The one defeat came skipping Pat Haworth, Ann Crouch and Susie Warner in the fours, where they were beaten 25-16 by Linda Lester, Gwen Webster, Jenny Bainbridge and Sandra Godfrey.

Roy Bainbridge had a back problem so Wally Phillips substituted for him in the triples. With Mike Patching and Phil Hillsden, Phillips helped in a 12-11 win over David Mole, David Stevens and the unrelated Terry Stevens.

Converting five down to one up on the eighth end was a vital delivery by Terry Harman when skipping Ashley Dale, Hal Firth and Mike Lambert. They retained the fours title by winning 21-17 over Dave Cornwell, Roy Bainbridge, George Shaw and John Godfrey.
