There was a family celebration during Black-stone's victory over Hove Medina in the West Sussex League on Saturday.

When Kevin Woods took a catch in the deep he could not curtail his emotions for it was a very special moment for the 40-year-old as the bowler was his 13-year-old son James Woods.

Kevin said: "It was an historic moment for the Woods family. Ever since James was a baby we have been taking him up to the cricket and now he is bowling for us.

"He only came in because we were short and when their opening batsman Neil Soffe hit one into the deep there I was. It basically came straight down my throat.

"It was his first wicket for the club and for me to take the catch was really special with memories coming back to me.

"I really celebrated and I apologised to the batsman afterwards but I explained to the umpire so they understood why I was so happy."

James bowled nine overs of medium pace in an impressive display while his father further marked the occasion by taking 4-23 from six overs as Hove Medina were restricted to 178-8.

His joyous afternoon did not end there as Kevin then opened and carried his bat for an unbeaten 76 to steer his side to a last-over five-wicket victory.

The match was a real family affair as Blackstone included Colin White and his two sons Craig, the captain, and Matt while the umpire Reg Soffe had his son Neil dismissed by James.

Umpire Reg said: "Kevin celebrated and he said to me 'that was my son bowling', and I said 'well, that's my son you've just caught out'. It was a good catch and a good game."
