Tim Ambrose followed his first innings 73 with a battling 55 as Sussex seconds again struggled for runs against Hampshire.
Sussex, dismissed for 285 in their first innings of the Championship match at Hove, bettered that total by ten to leave Hampshire 227 to win.
Openers James Adams and Andy Sexton had taken their side to 10-0 when rain and bad light ended play 30 minutes early.
Ambrose resisted for just over three hours before being trapped by opening bowler Jamie Schofield, who finished with 4-73 from 21 overs. Sussex resumed on 41-1 and Ambrose and Jamie Carpenter had taken the score to 76 when Carpenter (35) was caught behind off James Tomlinson.
Stephen Ades joined Ambrose to add 67 for the fifth wicket before off spinner Irfan Shah (3-77) bowled Ades for 23. Sussex's last six wickets fell for 95 and after having coach Keith Greenfield caught for 25, Schofield claimed his fourth wicket when Ambrose was leg before.
