Police have launched an investigation after a man was killed in a mountain biking accident.

It is believed the victim suffered serious head injuries after he went flying over the handlebars of his machine.

The 28-year-old was taken to Eastbourne District General Hospital, where he was found to be dead.

He had been cycling on rubble and shingle near the town's Sovereign Harbour at 6.20pm on Saturday when the accident happened.

The area, earmarked for redevelopment, is popular with mountain bikers.

Inspector Tim Mottram, of Eastbourne police, said the victim was cycling down a steep bank of earth when he came off.

He said the victim was not believed to have been wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

The site was surrounded by a security fence which people had to move to get into the area.

The rider was a local man but police said they would not release the name of the victim until relatives have been informed.

Four people, including a small boy, were injured when two vehicles collided.

A blue Vauxhall Astra was involved in the crash with a Jeep at about 3.50pm in Seaside, Eastbourne.

The casualties, including a young boy, were taken to Eastbourne District General Hospital.
