Brighton College head Anthony Seldon has denied speculation that he could become the next man in charge of Eton College.
Mr Seldon was tipped for the top teaching job at the country's most celebrated school in a national newspaper story.
Dr Seldon said: "It came as quite a surprise to me. Naturally it is flattering to be personally singled out as a possible candidate.
"But I'd rather continue, as the article kindly says, to "enliven education" here at Brighton College.
"As far as I'm concerned, Brighton College is the equal of Eton. Our school is full, with waiting lists, and we're going from strength to strength."
Dr Seldon has a high profile as head of Brighton College. He has also written several acclaimed political books including a biography of John Major.
His latest book, just published, was a compilation of expert views about Tony Blair's term as Prime Minister.
