Sussex ended the season with a 22-14 defeat away to Durham.
The damage was done when the men's B team, suffering a bad attack of missed doubles syndrome, crashed 11-1 in their match.
The only Sussex winner was Ian Burnett, who won 3-0 and took the man of the match award for the third time this season with a 22.47 average.
The ladies' B team had earlier shared the honours 3-3, with victories by Chris Gladman, Carly Blay and Trish Kidd.
Blay was lady of the match with a 3-0 win and 19.75 average, while Gladman and Kidd both won 3-1. Gladman hit a 171 in the process.
The ladies' A team also drew, with Karen Blackman producing a superb show of finishing on her return from maternity leave. She won 3-0 and took the lady of the match award with an average of 19.75.
Marcia Brett hit a 180 in her 3-0 win, and Karen Win-ter edged out her opponent 3-2.
That meant Sussex went into the final men's A team match trailing by 17-7, and it got a lot worse before it got better.
Ricky Blay winning 3-1 and a brilliant display by Steve Agate, who won 3-2 with a 28.78 average, were the only two wins in the first seven sets.
Sussex then hit back to win the last five sets and take the men's A match 7-5.
The effort was capped by a magnificent man of the match performance by John Nisbet, who won 3-2 and finished with a big average of 32.67.
The other Sussex winners were Keith Price 3-0, Tim Norriss 3-0, Rod Hawkins 3-2 and Steve Barraclough 3-1.
