More than 35,000 music fans gathered on Brighton beach to witness Norman Cook's Big Beach Boutique.

The free concert drew fans from across Sussex to hear the DJ, also known as Fatboy Slim, blast out 90 minutes of party music.

Norman, who lives in Hove, was watched from the side of the stage by wife Zoe Ball as he rattled through a dazzling mix of dance hits including his latest single, Ya Mama.

Before the performance, he watched from a VIP balcony at the Brighton Centre with Zoe, their sleeping son, Woody, and her father, Johnny Ball.

Norman said he worried all day about the weather but was delighted when it kept dry on the night.

He said seeing so many people had been an amazing experience and, as a Brighton boy, it had been the "warmest" gig he had ever played.

Police said there were no arrests and, despite its size, the event had passed off without any trouble.

The music was switched off for five minutes mid-set amid fears a section of the crowd was in danger of being washed away by the rising tide.

Fireworks launched from the West Pier lit up the sky for the final track, Praise You.

Chief Inspector Kul Verma said: "The crowd was good-natured, the event was a success and once again the city proved its reputation as being a great place for a night out."

Footage from the event will be screened as part of a documentary on Channel 4 at 11pm on Saturday.
