A small group of demonstrators urged motorists to boycott Esso in a protest outside a petrol station.
Brighton-based group DFCC (Don't Fuel Climate Change) handed out leaflets in Lewes Road, Brighton, in protest at Esso's links with US President George Bush and the impact of his policies on the global climate.
Spokesman Richard Turner said: "Most people received our message very positively and the only ones who said they would still use Esso were those with company accounts there.
"Once a few motorists chose not to go on to the forecourt all the cars stopped going in so it was very successful."
