A register of same-sex partnerships could be set up in Brighton and Hove.

Liberal Democrats leader Paul Elgood, who is gay, is tabling a motion to the council calling on the city to follow London in setting up a register.

London mayor Ken Livingstone is setting up a register from September to give people, whether heterosexual or homosexual, the chance to register their relationship publicly.

Coun Elgood wants Brighton and Hove, as a noted gay centre, to follow the lead.

He is asking lesbian and gay couples to support it and say why it will be important for them.

He said: "The introduction of a partnership register is a simple question of treating all our citizens equally.

"I believe the register will be important to all members of the lesbian and gay community."

Lib Dem peer Lord Lester is tabling a Bill in the Lords asking for legal recognition of same-sex partnerships.

Coun Elgood said: "I want Brighton and Hove, the lesbian and gay capital of the UK, to be at the forefront of these important moves for equality.

"Already same-sex ceremonies take part at the Royal Pavilion and this is the natural progression to formalise what already takes place.

"This is also about recognising the large and diverse community the city has and giving each of our citizens the same opportunities and rights.

"I believe such a register will receive wholesale support, not just from lesbians and gays, their friends and relatives, but also straight couples who may wish to formalise their commitment without going through a full wedding ceremony."

Coun Elgood will gather support at the Pride festival in Brighton and Hove on August 11 before putting the idea to the council in September.
