Frances Houslop broke a finger but boosted her international chances as she helped England seniors finish fourth in the Korean Telecom Cup in Seoul.

The 19-year-old from Horsted Keynes has sealed a trip to Holland this month, provided she is fit, with her performances in Asia.

The former Ardingly College pupil said: "I will take specialist advice but I hope to make it. I got struck by the ball but it didn't hurt at the time because the adrenalin kept me going. It should prove another fantastic learning opportunity for me."

Houslop gained experience in the Cup with a series of matches which included two against Olympic champions, Australia.

She said: "There were so many things I learned both on and off the court. Nothing specific, but just the experience of being involved in a big international tournament.

"We played very close to the Olympic Stadium, where the British men won a gold medal at the 1988 Olympics, and that in itself was inspirational.

"I didn't feel overawed at facing Australia despite the fact I'd only played a couple of games for the senior ladies before. They are just a team like us who are building up to the next Olympics.

"I've played under-21s but the Cup matches were more intense."

Frances played left-half and right-half as she helped England beat Japan 7-1, draw 2-2 with the United States, and lose 2-1 to eventual winners China, 3-2 to Australia and 3-1 to Korea, who were runners-up.

In the play-off for third and fourth, England lost 8-4 to Australia after being 5-1 down at half-time.

Frances said: "We had a poor first half but gave it a go after the interval."

She added: "Overall I think the coaches in charge were pleased with me."
