Councillors have vowed to fight plans for a mobile phone mast close to a school.

Telecoms giant Orange wants to put the 14m mast on a small grass verge at the junction of Hangleton Way and West Way, Hangleton, Hove.

Residents say it is too close to Hove Park School and is outside the entrance to Greenleas Park, which is used by families and children.

Local councillors Mark Barnard and Peter Willows said they would oppose the scheme, which does not need city council planning permission unless the mast is higher than 15 metres.

They opposed plans for a much taller mast close to flats in Chichester Close, which was given permission last year despite outrage from residents.

Coun Barnard said: "Not only will the mast be obtrusive but the jury is still out on the health implications of masts.

"This is a crass proposal and there is no way we will accept a mast so close to a school and children's play areas.

"There is already a huge monstrosity of a mast, which went up last year right outside people's homes.

"We will not allow the council to once again dismiss the feelings of local people.

"Peter Willows and I have started a petition against this latest mast."
