I saw The Argus front-page picture (August 28) and froze, as it brought back memories of the tragic, untimely and wasteful death of my daughter.

She (as was reported in May) was taking her first and last ride on a waterbike - because of another's inexperience and incompetence in controlling the craft, Jacqui was killed about three minutes after mounting the bike. My life was ripped apart.

I have tried and continue to try to raise the profile of this issue as a situation that needs addressing urgently by local government, Parliament and Europe.

I fail to understand how people are allowed to take "control" of such craft with no training or previous knowledge.

Young people, especially those with a strong male ego, will want to show off their "skill" which, sadly in most cases, is merely stupidity and exhibitionism.

We do not allow anyone to use a motorbike, car or gun without training, licences and, when required, safety clothing.

So why do we pussyfoot around the use of water-bikes? How can we continue to allow such dangerous situations to continue on our waterways?

The irresponsible riding of these craft continues because there is no enforcement on the water to curtail it.

How many more lives have to be lost and how many more parents' ruined before serious attention is given to this situation?
