Albion have not received a bid from Southampton for Bobby Zamora, says Seagulls boss Micky Adams.

Adams insists he has not even been contacted by former Saints team-mate Stuart Gray.

And the good news for Albion fans is that their Worthington Cup second-round rivals are reportedly poised to move for unsettled Chelsea striker Eidur Gudjohnsen.

Southampton have been persistently linked with Zamora since drawing a blank in their first two Premiership matches against Chelsea and Leeds.

The Argus revealed that Gray's assistant Mick Wadsworth watched Zamora head his fourth goal of the season in last Monday's 4-0 win against Blackpool at Withdean.

Gray said: "We wouldn't be doing our job if we didn't watch players like him."

The News of the World claimed yesterday that Saints are prepared to break their transfer record to land Zamora.

But Adams said: "We haven't had an offer. I haven't even spoken to Stuart or anybody at Southampton about Bobby Zamora and that's the honest truth."

Icelandic international Gudjohnsen, bought by Chelsea from Bolton for £4 million, is said to be Saints' top target.

The former PSV Eindhoven forward was not even in the squad when Chelsea won the first League match at Southampton's new St Mary's Stadium.

Gray hopes to have a new front man in his line-up for Sunday's trip to Spurs. Southampton are at Withdean in the Worthington Cup 48 hours later.

Albion are still above this Saturday's visitors Queens Park Rangers on goal difference, despite their first defeat of the season at Northampton on Friday night.

Oldham, managed by Albion's record buy Andy Ritchie, have moved above the Seagulls after drawing 2-2 at Tranmere on Saturday.

Huddersfield went top of the table last night after beating Wycombe Wanderers 2-1.
