A driver was killed in a two-car crash early today after a weekend spate of serious accidents.

A pedestrian died and seven people were injured in separate crashes on Saturday and Sunday.

Today's smash happened just before 7am on the A259 at Exceat.

The road was blocked for several hours while emergency services attended the scene, between Friston Pond and Exceat Hill.

Fire crews from Seaford, Lewes and Eastbourne helped free the casualties.

On Saturday evening a 41-year-old man died in a collision with a car as he crossed the A259 at Fishersgate.

The driver of the Volvo involved, a 19-year-old man from Hove, suffered shock.

At 7.20pm last night, four young men were hurt when the Mini City they were in left the road, ploughed into a ditch and was partially submerged.

The driver and a passenger, both 20, suffered serious injuries and two other men, 20 and 19, were slightly hurt.

The accident happened in Marsh Lane, Merston, near Chichester. The four men were taken to St Richard's Hospital, Chichester.

Two hours later last night a 21-year-old woman passenger in a Peugeot 106 was seriously hurt in a crash with a Peugeot 406 at Broadbridge Heath, Horsham.

The 106 driver, a 21-year-old woman, suffered slight injuries and the 406 driver, a 42-year-old man, was unhurt.

The names of those involved have not been released by Sussex Police, who operate data protection guidelines.
