Haywards Heath scored three stunning tries in six second half minutes to set up a National Cup clash with one of the famous clubs in the game.

Heath's half century means a trip to Blackheath, now languishing in National Three South, and served a warning of the firepower they will take into their first London One season.

Thanet will be playing in the same division this season. In fact, they return to Whitemans Green next Saturday to kick-off the league campaign.

They may do so with some trepidation after being on the receiving end of some dazzling Heath attacking work.

Skipper Henry Goodburn insisted he was never worried, even when his side were temporarily reduced to 13 men and saw their lead whittled back to 26-23 early in the second period.

Owen Ashton's fifth penalty gave them a bit of breathing space, then the runners took centre stage.

Hooker Nick Killick, one of two men earlier sin-binned, finished off after forwards and backs had combined and skipper Goodburn cantered over following a slick set move revolving around Jon Graham and Andy Cook.

But it was Cook's try in between those which will really stick in the memory. Thanet outside half Gareth Dedman opted to kick downfield rather than for touch in a bid to keep the ball alive and he no doubt regretted it as the Heath full back fielded the ball near halfway, then set off on a run which took him outside two tackles before stepping inside a couple more and touching down behind the posts.

Heath had earlier taken control after a slow start through Mark Pymm's alert kick through and touch down and a great try for the forwards as Tom Hills powered his way over after a textbook lineout routine.

Killick's flailing arm and Russ Sheppard's tackle to prevent Thanet taking a quick free-kick left Heath's pack desperately short for ten minutes, allowing visiting skipper Adam Thomas a pushover score.

Centre Peter Macaulay then stepped through some slack tackling to bring the margin back to three points and remind Heath there is still plenty to work on ahead of the league campaign.

Goodburn said: "The work we have done on our fitness really told. We made a couple of silly mistakes when we went two-men down but once we got the ball coming out to the backs and I thought we dominated."

WORTHING went down 38-15 to Gosport and Fareham, Danny Piggott scored a try and there were goal points from Tony Cruz, who has taken over goalkicking duties from while Ben Coulson recovers from a broken ankle.

Youthful Uckfield beat Hastings with tries from Lee Evans (3), Gareth Quay (2), Nick Ridley and David Cook.

Warren Malherbe and Paul Gray scored tries for Crowborough in their spirited 19-14 defeat to Crawley whose scorers were Mike Gildea, Lee Preston and Gerard Bowers.
