A man who risked his baby daughter's life by driving at speeds of up to 60mph to escape the police has been jailed.

Andrew Rose, 20, sped away from officers after he was spotted in a stolen Austin Metro, Lewes Crown Court heard yesterday.

Rose, of Glynde Road, Brighton, admitted stealing the car from Freshfield Road three days before the incident on July 6.

John Marsden-Lynch, prosecuting, told the court police had been led on a high-speed chase throughout Brighton after Rose refused to stop.

He said officers initially used sirens to order Rose to pull over at the Vogue Gyratory.

Mr Marsden-Lynch said: "The police officer saw a male driving, a woman in front and a small infant on her lap, none of them wearing seatbelts."

Mr Marsden-Lynch said Rose had driven through Coombe Road, Dewe Road and Southall Avenue at up to 60mph.

The court heard Rose eventually stopped the car and ran but officers gave chase and arrested him.

Rose, who has previous convictions for driving offences, admitted possession of crack cocaine, which he had thrown to the ground before his arrest, and driving offences.

Philip Meredith, defending, said Rose's dyslexia had prevented him from being able to sit a driving theory test.

He added that Rose had been planning to use the £5 worth of crack cocaine himself.

Judge Anthony Scott-Gall sentenced him to six months for possession of drugs, 12 months for aggravated vehicle taking, six months for driving while disqualified and two years for unlawful exposure of a child to danger, all to run concurrently.
