Sharon Rose is right to raise the issue of councillors endorsing the No campaign for the elected mayor possibly having a vested interest through being able to claim additional allowances for attending further committee meetings.
I am pleased to reassure her the opposite is the truth. Councillors are paid a set allowance regardless of the number of meetings they attend.
Those councillors supporting the No campaign are offering their further services without payment. In this way, they seek to ensure democracy is represented in a proper manner.
A No vote will save £1 million (the likely cost of an elected mayor over a four-year period).
