Bank customers were told they could not have any change because it had all got stuck in a lift.
Staff at Lloyds TSB in Church Road, Burgess Hill, were unable to supply customers with coins for 24 hours.
Part of the building suffered a power cut on Tuesday afternoon because of road works.
The coins were being transferred in the lift to another part of the building when it broke down.
A bank spokesman said the power failure affected the lift and the money became locked inside.
He added: "It's all over now and normal service has resumed."
