Albion fans have symbolised their affection for the Seagulls by forking out £2,000 for a gigantic flag.

But the potential record-breaker is so big it could turn into a flag of inconvenience.

The 64ft by 32ft flag, made by Sheffield-based firm Fantazia, was meant to be delivered to Withdean Stadium on Thursday night.

Organiser Simon Sissling has already been in touch with the Guinness Book of Records.

Its size means Albion have abandoned plans to hoist it behind the south stand and supporters could also be refused permission to unfurl it at away games.

They are hoping it will be displayed instead behind the west goal at Withdean or passed over the heads of spectators in the south stand.

The Argus revealed in April plans by fans to fly the flag for their heroes.

The idea evolved on the internet on the North Stand Chat web site and was developed by staunch Seagulls supporter Sissling.

The Hove-based season ticket supporter, a fan for 20 years, led the campaign to raise funds.

Donations poured in, including one from the Argus. Sissling received permission from the club to use their logo on the design, which was selected from a shortlist of six.

The designs were published in the Argus and fans given the opportunity to vote for their favourite via This Is Brighton & Hove.

Sissling said: "Of the six original designs, the final choice was by far the most popular amongst the people who contributed towards it.

"I am assured by the manufacturers this is the largest flag they have ever made for any club, including any they have made worldwide.

"There is every prospect of it entering the Guinness Book of Records.

"All of us from north stand chat are very proud we can show our allegiance to the Albion in this their centenary year."

The flag will be stored at Withdean and Sissling has made sure it does not go up in smoke. The £2,000 cost includes £400 for flameproofing.
