A couple accused of cruelty to a four-year-old boy had been applauded for coping with the child, a court heard.
Experts made an assessment a month before the boy died and said the couple, who were in the process of adopting him, were "dealing with the situation in a way to be applauded".
Lewes Crown Court heard the boy, John Smith, died after suffering a brain haemorrhage on Christmas Eve 1999. He had 54 external injuries and four adult bite marks.
Simon and Michelle McWilliams, of Gardner Road, Fishersgate, Southwick, deny inflicting the injuries.
The child's social worker, David Pamely, cross examined yesterday, agreed the professionals' report had congratulated the couple.
Lord Thomas, for one defendant, quoted from it, saying: "Well done to Michelle and Simon McWilliam for their excellent efforts and tenacity."
Mr Pamely agreed with Lord Thomas that he never found the boy "cowering like a beaten child". He said John was relaxed and had a good relationship with the McWilliams.
Mr Pamely said severe bruising found on the boy on December 20 was explained away as self abuse by the McWilliams.
He took no action apart from asking for a report from a colleague.
He said the colleague had been satisfied the injuries were not the result of abuse.
Previous injuries on the boy were also put down to John harming himself. Mr Pamely said the McWilliams were concerned about the boy and wanted help.
The case continues.
