Tony Greenstein, of Allies for Democracy, today challenged Lord Bassam to a debate on whether Brighton and Hove should have an elected mayor.
Mr Greenstein, secretary of Brighton and Hove Unemployed Workers Centre, thinks people should vote no in next month's referendum while the peer is a strong supporter of the yes campaign.
The two are old adversaries and Mr Greenstein said: "We are sure such a debate would attract enormous interest."
