I have travelled Coombe Road, Brighton, in both directions over many decades and, to my knowledge, never has an accident occurred there. Various traffic-calming measures have been introduced but now I note two chicanes have been installed, one opposite the school and another lower down the road.
As this is now a main thoroughfare for traffic travelling from Bear Road and proceeding east and is also a main bus route, the installation of these chicanes will serve to allow traffic to go in one direction only at two points in the road and will no doubt cause severe traffic build-up in both directions, for no better reason, it appears, than to cause the utmost difficulty for drivers using this road. The result will no doubt be that traffic will move into Milner Road to avoid the congestion.
This appears to be another example of Brighton and Hove City Council spending taxpayers' money with no regard to the consequences of its actions. I am strongly drawn to the conclusion these ridiculous schemes are being implemented so as to draw attention to the total incompetence of this local authority to do anything in the interest of common sense or for the benefit of the residents of the city.
The conclusion I draw from all this is that the purpose could well be to indicate exactly this position, so when the referendum is held for a mayor most people will say it must be better than it is now and vote for the mayor, when, of course, the local authority should be acting responsibly at all times.
