A motorist got himself into a jam of a different kind when he wedged his car into a narrow lane.
He tried to drive down a footpath alleyway yesterday but got stuck between two walls at an awkward angle which stopped him driving backwards or forwards.
His car was stuck fast for more than an hour after he mistook Broomers Lane, a twitten in Lewes, for a through road.
The driver was too embarrassed to speak to passers-by but was grateful for help when the police arrived to try and free him.
One onlooker, who lives in Lewes, said: "These twittens might look like little roads, but there is no way they look wide enough to get a car down.
"I felt very sorry for him because he was very, very embarrassed. He was handed a cup of tea while he waited for the police.
"His car was just wedged into this tight space. It was a little comical when the police arrived because they tried everything and still couldn't get the car out.
"They tried rocking it, tried to drive it backwards and forwards, but they couldn't free it.
"In the end, they resorted to using a sledgehammer to smash a block out of the wall at one side.
"That gave them enough room just to pull it out using manpower."
