I'm not for or against the way the Brighton ladies of the night ply their trade but I am a bit concerned at the penalty for placing advertising cards in phone boxes - a £1,000 fine or six months' imprisonment.
It's a bit strong, isn't it? It's about time the lawmakers got their priorities right. Hit-and-run drivers who have killed people have been punished less severely than this - I've heard of £250 and six months.
The one sensible punishment would be to collect all the cards and post them to the BT exchange, where all the phone numbers on them could be disconnected. They would soon stop then. Perhaps BT could do this job itself. The ladies would soon get fed up of ringing BT for reconnection. Without their phones, they can't work.
